    Hi everyone,
I’m currently receiving unemployment benefits in Denmark as a recent graduate (EU citizen), and I might have the opportunity to do a 6-month paid internship in another EU country (approx. 5,000 DKK/month).

Of course, during this time, I would not claim for any unemployment benefits at all, but I would continue paying my a-kasse membership. I plan to keep my CPR number, rental contract, and Danish bank account, as I will be traveling back to Denmark regularly.

Is it allowed/legal to do something like this? And if so, would I be able to resume my unemployment benefits once I return to Denmark after the internship?

Thanks a lot in advance for any guidance

    Hi,

As a recent graduate, you are entitled to 1 year of unemployment benefit, which must be used within a reference period of 2 years.

So, as long as you will be back in Denmark in time to use the rest of your unemployment benefits, there is no problem by pausing the unemployment benefits.

Just remember to inform the A-kasse.

You may even have the opportunity to use your income from abroad to extend the Unemployment benefit period in Denmark. 1 hour work will give 2 hours extra unemployment benefits. But you must ask your A-kasse about that, because maybe they will not accept your internship as a “normal job on normal conditions”. It will also require documentation of course.

    Best regards,
    Anders Weber, A-kasser.dk
