I’m studying the final semester of my masters program at KU with graduation on May 31st, but commuted from Lund in Sweden during my first year of studies. When asking the support at akademikernes a-kasse about my potential eligibility for unemployment benefits, they simply told me that I wasn’t eligible at all. Does this mean that there really is no opportunity for me to receive any form of unemployment benefits after my graduation if I join an a-kasse, while I search for jobs in Copenhagen? And if not, where should I turn for help then?

Hi,
depending on whether you are an EU-citizen or not, there can be two reasons why the A-kasse have rejected you:
- If you are an EU-citizen, but did not stay in Denmark before staring at KU, you do not meet the requirements for being eligble for Unemployment benefits as graduate.
- And if you are a non-EU citizen you may not have the right to stay and work in Denmark after graduation, and thus do not meet the requirements for being eligible for unemployment benefits.
If you are not eligible for Unemployment benefits, the only option would be to try to get som cash benefits (“kontanthjælp”) from the municipality. You must contact the kommune office in the town you live.
