    Hi,

I have a permanent resident (PR) visa in Denmark and have been living here since the last 16 years. I did get A-Kasse after my masters for a while (this was before the 2 years limit law) and have been working full time in the IT field for the last 10-12 years.

Due to the recent covid situation, I survived the first round of the firing but the situation is bad at my work place and probably I can’t survive the second round of the firing coming in the next 1-2 months.

My plan (assuming that I lose my job), is to get A-kasse and try to find another job for the next 6-9 months and if I don’t find one in that time, I want to return back to my home country permanently.

Well that is my situation and my plan, and now coming to my question:

    — > After going through my plan, do I owe anything to the government of Denmark and have to pay back before moving back to my home country?

    Regards,

    Kevin

    Hi,

I assume that you are currently a member of A-kasse, and also that you meet the requirements for being eligible for Unemployment benefits (“dagpenge”).

And since you have a permanent resident visa, you seem to meet all conditions.

If you also, while receiving dagpenge, do what you have to do, this means applying for jobs, come to meetings in A-kasse/Jobcenter etc., then you will receive dagpenge fully legally, and therefor you can never be asked to pay anything back to the Danish State or the A-kasse.

You can compare A-kasse membership with other insurances you buy. You pay some fee for some time, and you may use the insurance or not, but in case you need to use the insurance, then you will get paid, but you do not have to pay back later.

You can post a comment if you need further information.

    Best regards,

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I meant “dagpenge”, and I’m a member of A-Kasse association for the last 13-14 years.

Good to know that it works as insurances 🙂 I wasn’t aware of it and I was under impression that I have to pay back some time in future or if I leave Denmark permanently.

Again thanks for your time and the valuable information.

    Regards,

    Kevin
